A good self-image is important for everyone to have. A major benefit of a good self-image is a good self-esteem. Why? Having a good self-esteem brings confidence for the individual to have. Why is it so important to talk about self-image & self-esteem to your child?

Talking about self-esteem to your young daughter or son is important to who they are going to be in life. Not many people consider this idea. If you take a moment to think about it, it really does come down to how we as parents teach our children to respect who they are, love who they are and all else will come.

It is hard to be a child in today’s society. Let’s just say it’s hard to be a child in any generation when you look at it. Bullies at school, the Mean Girls, the Mean Boys, we can think of more but truly who wants to.

That’s why it’s so important we teach our children how to love who they are inside and out. Our kids are going to go through things we can’t keep them from. For instance, the heartbreak from a relationship/friendship gone sour. As a parent, we want to save them from all the hurt in the world. But, we can’t. That’s a reality. A sad reality.

We can however, give them the tools that even though they may experience some downs they can always go up. Whether it be a bad breakup, a disappointing interaction at school with a “cool” kid, or a disappointing grade.

1. Reassurance that who they are IS good enough. Some people aren’t made to stay in our life throughout our book of life.

2. Disappointing Grade: Trying your best is the important thing to remember. You can not fault anyone for giving it all that you’ve got. If you still need assistance, we can get you the assistance you need.

3. Ongoing Support. Knowing that you will always be there for them is an important fact. Constant support is a great tool that everyone needs. As a child growing up, knowing that your parent/s are there for you is a big confidence boost. Knowing you can lean on them when you choose to, is a foundation every child needs and they don’t realize they do until they need it.

I was given a thought to this discussion as I was conversing with another parent about self-image and self-confidence. It reminded me that how important it is to ensure our children have the best self-image they can. All we can do is give them the tools and teach them how to use them. With constant nurturing and love, they can use the tools to navigate through their book of life.
